Schulz S 602

Schulz S 602

No. 001. Mono. The first finished one.

The S 602 was the first amplifier I built as a complete, enclosed unit for everyday use. Before it, there had only been experiments on the bench — open wiring, temporary setups, nothing truly finished.

DIN connections were standard at the time. I connected a cassette recorder with a DIN cable, switched it on — and it worked.

It mattered to me that the amplifier looked like a proper piece of equipment, not a bench experiment. So it received a maker’s plate on the back and a nameplate on the front.

If memory serves, output was around five watts. The amplifier ran from a single-rail supply, hence the large output capacitor. The small power amplifier began as a kit; the op-amp input stage was my own design. A rear level control allowed the input sensitivity to be matched to the source.

The name was already there.

For the first time, the circuit had a permanent home. Nothing temporary, nothing left on the bench.
