Split 4

Soul of Sound Split 4

Two in. Eight out. Nothing active.

Split 4 was built for a simple studio requirement: to send one balanced signal to several destinations without adding another active stage. Each of its two channels accepts one XLR input and distributes it to four outputs.

The concept is deliberately passive — no amplification, no power supply, no additional active electronics. Only what is needed to distribute the signal under controlled conditions.

Split 4 was created to feed several signal processors from the same source without placing another active stage in the signal path. Modern line-level outputs are generally capable of driving several high-impedance inputs in parallel, making an additional distribution amplifier unnecessary for a modest number of destinations.

There are practical limits to this approach, but four parallel outputs per channel remain a deliberately conservative choice. Split 4 uses that headroom to keep the signal path passive, simple and as unobtrusive as possible.

The outputs are not simply hard-wired in parallel. Each branch includes a small amount of series isolation together with the necessary high-frequency filtering, helping to keep the connected equipment from interacting unnecessarily with one another.

Split 4 is ultimately an exercise in restraint. Modern source equipment already provides much of what is needed to drive several destinations within sensible limits. Rather than adding circuitry for its own sake, the design uses that capability and adds only what is necessary for controlled distribution.

Sometimes the most deliberate solution is the one that does less.
